The History and Benefits of Atami Onsen

The Origins of Atami Onsen

Atami Onsen was originally discovered over 1,500 years ago. The name “Atami,” meaning “hot sea,” comes from the way the hot spring water naturally flows into the surrounding ocean.

In this unique town, there are 7 old hot spring sources called Atami Nanayu, and include Nonaka-no-Yu, Sajiro-no-Yu, Furo-no-Yu, Seizaemon-no-Yu, Kawara-Yu, Oh-Yu, and Kozawa-no-Yu.

Even in historical times, Atami was popular. Records show that shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu enjoyed Atami’s hot spring water so much that he had the onsen water transported 112 km (almost 70 miles!) to Edo Castle after staying in the town for a week in 1604.

Why Do Tourists Visit Atami Onsen Today?

Located at the tip of the Izu Peninsula, Atami is conveniently just 40 minutes from Tokyo by Shinsanken, making it the most easily accessible seaside onsen to visit for tourists.

The resort town has a mixture of beautiful ocean views, delicious seafood, relaxing onsen in an atmosphere reminiscent of the Edo-era. On clear days you can spot Mount Fuji, too!

The town was really popular in the 1980s, experiencing a huge tourism boom until the “Atami bubble” burst and tourism declined drastically.

The town is still recovering, and some people think it’s stuck in the 80s. But when I visited I personally loved the retro charm I felt around town.

Atami Onsen Benefits and Healing Properties

Atami’s spring waters have a high chloride content, slightly alkaline and transparent. This type of onsen is gentle on the skin, and leaves your skin smooth and hydrated.

The high salt content helps preserve body heat, improve circulation, and has mild antibacterial effects!

Rich in metasilicic acid, the waters are especially prized for their beauty benefits.

13 Best Atami Onsen Ryokan Stays

To make your decision easier, I’ve divided the best ryokan and onsen hotels in Atami into different categories.

  • Modern Ryokan: These are more like hotels with ryokan features. They may have tatami floors and onsen, but may also have western beds, roof top pools, big buffets, and other hotel amenities.

  • Luxury Ryokan: These ryokan are top of the line, with high end amenities and top tier service. With an amazing stay does come a heavier price tag though!
  • Conveniently Located: These ryokan are the close to Atami Station or Atami's popular Ginza Shopping Street, so they're perfect for an overnight getaway from Tokyo.

Tips for Booking Ryokan in Japan

Book early or cry later

Ryokans typically open reservations 3–6 months ahead, and the best ones sell out quickly. I love using Booking and Agoda because they often include free cancellation, so you can book a room and always cancel later if you need to.

Confirm Meals in Advance

If you’d like breakfast or dinner included, it’s a good idea to double-check directly with the property after reserving. Occasionally, meal requests don’t sync properly when booking through international sites, so I usually follow up with a quick email.

Don’t cram your itinerary

Ryokans are meant to be a slow, relaxing experience, and if you pack your schedule too tightly, you won’t get to enjoy the small details that make it special.

Welcome tea service at Saka Hotel Kyoto with a warm hand towel, green tea, and traditional sweets on a wooden tray

For example, I once booked a tour an hour after my check in time. The ryokan provided us with tea and snacks and a view of their scenic garden, and we had to rush through what was designed to be a rejuvenating start to our stay.

Everything is carefully arranged for you from the moment you arrive, so give yourself time to really soak it in.

There’s an Onsen Tax

Even if you don’t plan to use the hot springs, note that a small onsen tax is added to your bill at check-in. This fee is required by law for all accommodations with hot spring facilities.

Japanese Bathing and Onsen Etiquette

Before Entering the Bath
  • Wash thoroughly so you’re clean before stepping in.
  • Rinse off all soap completely.
  • Tie up long hair.
  • Perform kakeyu: pour hot water over yourself before getting in to help your body adjust. (I had to repeat this a few times since the water always feels scorching at first!)
General Tips
  • Step out and cool down if you feel overheated.
  • Rehydrate with water after bathing.
  • A final rinse with cool water can help close your pores.

Best Atami Ryokan and Onsen Hotels FAQ

What's the difference between an onsen and a ryokan?

A ryokan is a traditional Japanese inn with tatami floors, futon bedding, and attentive service. Stays often include kaiseki dinners or hotpot-style meals along with breakfast.

An onsen, on the other hand, refers to the natural hot spring itself. These geothermal baths are rich in minerals believed to aid circulation, relax sore muscles, and improve skin health.

Most ryokans feature onsen, but not all of them! And keep in mind that meals aren’t always included in the booking price, so always confirm before reserving.

Which ryokan have private onsen?

All these places are Atami ryokan with private onsen options, either in-room or available to rent.

Are Ryokans more expensive than Hotels?

Yes, they are. However, remember that you’re paying for upscale Japanese hospitality, and most of the time your stay includes two meals. I personally think the food balances the cost and makes it well worth the value.

How many days should I stay in a ryokan?

I personally believe that the ideal amount of time to stay in a ryokan is 1-2 days.

One day feels a little short, but you’ll still have an amazing stay! You’ll still enjoy dinner and breakfast before checking out.

Two days is perfect if you want to explore the nearby area while also enjoying all the hotel’s amenities.

I don’t recommend three days because the meals might get a bit repetitive.

Conclusion: Best Atami Onsen Ryokan Stays

Here's your round up of the best Atami ryokan and onsen hotels! I have a particular soft spot for private onsen with ocean views, and Atami is one of the best places for you to experience this yourself.

A girl holds her arms over a rail, looking at a cherry blossom tree adorned with fully bloomed pink flowers in Japan.
Atami Castle!

Yes, this city is a little retro, but I don’t mind the vintage-ness of it all. It’s pretty endearing, but you still have some amazing modern hotel picks too.

Anyways, if you want any tips planning your Atami trip, feel free to reach out by leaving a comment or emailing me at audrey@getlostinjapan.com! I offer customized itineraries too.
